Benrigg to Blaydon via Killmarnock, Swaledale and Eugene, USA for Harriers 13.6.17
This week Richmond's finest were running from Benrigg in the west, to Blaydon in the east and Killmarnock, Eugene, USA and Cateran in the North. Another set of top results produced on a wet and windy weekend in June! At the famous Blaydon races, Jeremy Pattison had a great run and was the 1st Harrier back home in 94th place (33:20), Mike Jeffries in 126th (34:26), he was followed by Steve Middleton making his competitive comeback after his illness in 168th (35:06) and Deborah Pennick in 1716th (49:09).
Alan Ashcroft returns to form in the Bendrigg 10km race and had a great race to take 2nd overall (38:18). Jeremy Pattison followed up his run on Friday with a strong showing at the Everyone Active Mermaid 10k, finishing in 15th place (37:53, 2nd V40). Ronnie Corbett and Lucy Goundry took on the ‘Roon the Toon’ 10k at Kilmarnock with 2 excellent runs. Ronnie finished in 37th overall (38:52) and Lucy in 173th (44:45, 7th V40). Donna Riddler pushed her way to win the annual Knaresborough bed race and retake the trophy with other team members from Ripon Runners.
Julian Simpson ran the annual Swaledale marathon (notoriously not the flattest of courses) and had a great run to finish in 4th place in a new pb (03:15:23) and Rachel Ross-Rusell also completed the gruelling course.
Liam Rabjohn ran in the 5000m at the Northern championships, the race didn’t go as planned but he still finished in a very respectful 14th (15:30:80). A number of our junior athletes competed in the North Yorkshire schools championships. In the junior boys 1500m, Kyle Rabjohn took an excellent 3rd (04:42:0). In the inter boys James Davison won both the 200m and 400m races (23:8 and 52:4), Ben Ross-Russell was 3rd in the 200m (24:4) and Dylan Soley was 2nd in the 800m (02:17:0). In the senior boys Adam Walker took the title in the 400m (51:9) and Luke Hack also winning the 800m (02:07:0). In the girls Junior competition Emily Harris won the 100m (13:0) and was 2nd in the 200m (28:3). Abbie Robson won the javelin convincingly (26:36). In the inter girls 100m Joey Hewson ran to 2nd in the 100m (13:6) and also the 200m (27:5). Eliza Withers finished 2nd in the 300m (44:4) and also 2nd in the 80m hurdles (13:4).
Marc Scott ran his final races for Tulsa in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the top level of University running in the USA. He finished with his usual flourish taking the 10,000m crown (29:01:54) and 4th in the 5,000m the day after. Even more impressive was that he was in hospital the week before after collapsing during a training run.
This week was also another round of the North East masters, with 3 of our lady athletes in action. Jane Bond ran to a new pb in the 100m (19:8, 5th, pb) and Pauline Whittaker was 4th in heat 4 (16:1, sb). Jane also ran in the 400m in a new pb (1:41:4, 4th) and Pauline in heat 4 (80:9, 4th, sb). Fiona Wilson was the top lady in the triple jump in a seasons best (7:63). Jane Bond set a new pb in the javelin in 16th (8:10, Kev needs to stand over 10m away to be safe now) and Pauline Whittaker took top the place in the V50 javelin in a new pb (15:86).
Lastly and by no means least was Lee ‘the mad man’ Davies who took on the might of the Cateran Yomp, a 54 mile race held over rough terrain in rather interesting weather. Not only was his team 6th overall but Lee managed to make the podium in a superb 3rd place.
It has also been observed that some of our members have other additional talents, however that the running should still be their main day job and not trying out for a place on the X factor. His backing dancers are probably best watching You tube clips of the ‘Happy Mondays’ for some inspiration.
At Darlington parkrun, Ken Harker was 4th (18:31), Shona Fletcher in 7th and the 1st lady (19:16), Lewis Moore in a massive new pb in 12th (20:03), Shaun Purkiss in 24th (21:08), followed by Tony Ditchburn in 25th (21:08), Pauline Whittaker in 77th (24:38) and Nicki Buckett in 124th (27:18). Jo Adams took the win at Northallerton parkrun and with it the 1st lady (19:32) and young Tom O’Mahoney in 6th just outside his pb (21:50).
