English Schools Selection and Brass Monkeys

Richmond and Zetland Harriers were well represented this week in the North Yorkshire Schools cross country championships held at Knaresborough, the famous Brass Monkey half marathon at York and at numerous parkruns held throughout the area with many pb’s smashed in the process.

The North Yorkshire schools cross country championships took place at Knaresborough and a large number of our junior athletes were involved trying to attain selection for the English schools championships. Jake Stephenson had a good run in the U20’s race to finish in 11th, followed by another good performance by Harry Robson in 13th and Adam Walker running in slightly longer and unfamiliar terrain was a very decent 20th.

In the U17 race Matthew Lambert finished strongly in 15th and Sam Kettlewell with another good race in 26th. Kyle Rabjohn just lost out in the U15 race finishing 2nd and only 6 seconds behind the winner, with another great run from Charlie Stephenson in 3rd, the strong running Daniel Francis in 5th, Joe Reeve in 18th and Tom O’Mahoney in 19th just stepping up to this age group and a very fatigued George McCowie in 40th.

Joshua Hammett continues his good form with 4th and another good run from Dominic Wilford in 16th in the U13’s race. The girls U15 race had Alana Teasdale in a very good 12th and Emily Francis in a decent 26th in a huge field of runners. Shannon Robinson and Holly McCowie had excellent runs in the U13 girls field to finish in 5th and 6th respectively to cement their selection.

A large turnout of 14 Richmond and Zetland senior athletes headed off to York for the famous Brass Monkey half marathon including a few new to this distance of 13.1 miles. Rob Scott on first outing over this distance produced an incredible run to finish in a fantastic 10th (71:36), he was followed swiftly by Carl Jones in 58th and the 8th V40 (77:35), another outstanding run was by Lee Davies who smashed his pb by over 5 minutes (88:17, pb) in 61st and the 9th V40, Mark Forrest also ran well in 89th (79:47) and Ian Christon another new to this distance finished in 123rd (82:03). Jo Adams in her debut over this distance also had an outstanding run for a middle distance runner and finished as the 6th lady and 162nd (83:34), Dave Hack again not used to these longer distances smashed out a very decent run in 179th (84:31), next was Donna Riddler in 236th, the 15th lady and the 4th V35 (87:05), Sarah Gregory and Tony Ditchburn finished in 676th and 677th both in identical times (1:43:43), Kiska Wilson was 963rd (1:53:34) and glad to get the monkey off her back, Diane Adkins was 1071st in a big new pb (1:57:04), another to smash her previous best time by over 5 minutes was Nicki Buckett finishing in 1251st (2:04:50) and Jane Bond struggling with a cold in the run up to the race was a very respectful 1389th (2:17:39).

At Catterick parkrun Steve Sadler was 4th (19:28), Kevin Bond was 12th (21:37) and Pauline Whittaker 32nd (24:36). Shona Fletcher was 6th (22:36) at Northallerton parkrun. Ken Harker was 5th at Darlington parkrun (18:30) and Jeremy Pattison in 6th (18:33).
